Saskatoon: Bessborough Gardens Wedding

From the bride, Michaela:

I married my high school sweetheart just after our five-year anniversary. I’d always wanted to get married outside, and when I came across the gorgeous gardens at the Bessborough, I knew it was the perfect location.

The wedding took about six months to plan. We did not hire a wedding planner, so I was able to oversee every detail. At first I found it difficult due to the lack of wedding stores and rental places in Saskatoon. I ordered a lot of materials online and spent a lot of time collecting different items from around the city. Planning was stressful and a bit frustrating, but was overall very exciting. I didn’t realize all the details and time that went into planning a wedding until I was right in the midst of it. Most of all, I was just excited to be married and wanted all of the planning to be done so I could finally become a wife.

The forecast predicted thunderstorms for both the rehearsal dinner and the wedding day. On the day of the rehearsal, it absolutely poured all throughout the day. It was one of the rainiest days I had seen in Saskatoon. We moved the rehearsal into the Bessborough ballroom, and decided that we would get married in there if it continued to rain. Although we were slightly discouraged, we still had an amazing night with friends and family and were so excited to get married.

That night we prayed for the rain to go away. The next day I woke up bright and early and ran to the window, only to see that the clouds had cleared and that it was going to be a beautiful day! I watched the sunrise with my sister that morning, so excited and thankful for the day. The rest of the day turned out perfectly. We got married outside early in the afternoon in the gardens with the Saskatchewan River as a backdrop. We rented a party bus to transport the bridal party around the city for photos, which I would highly recommend!

While we were taking photos, our family and friends set up the reception in the ballroom. I had a vision in my head of what it would look like but I didn’t get to see it until we arrived for dinner. I’m really glad I didn’t, because it was such an amazing feeling to see everything come together with all of our friends and family present. It was a day that I will never forget. The wedding was amazing, but becoming a wife was even better.

One of the things that made our wedding unique was the personal touches that we put on all of the decorations. Very few of our decorations were rented. The signs, invitations, photobooth, seating chart, and the majority of the decorations were handmade. I created the center pieces by collecting items such as lanterns and candle holders. This made our wedding unique because the entire theme reflected our personalities and truly made it feel like our special day.

One of my favourite memories of the wedding day was waking up and looking outside my window to see that the skies had cleared. I will also never forget the look on my husband’s face as I came walking down the aisle. In that moment nothing else mattered but marrying him.
