From the bride, Carlie:
We got married in President Murray Park in Saskatoon. We picked this location because we both love being up north in the forest, and this park is a little piece of that right in the city. We spent the morning getting ready at the Sheraton while the guys got ready at Mac’s parent’s house. I could not have been more relaxed. There was nothing to be stressed about. The weather was hot and sunny, all the details were in place, and we were ready to have a really fun day celebrating our love with family and friends. It was really fun to see so many things we had been anticipating fall into place. Walking out of the ceremony together as husband and wife was such a cool moment! It was one of those moments you can’t quite imagine until it happens. We made sure we loved the music that played during the ceremony, and now whenever we listen to those songs it brings back memories.
Close family and friends were involved in our wedding in so many large and small ways, and it was amazing to feel their love and support. Having friends and family set up decorations, welcome our guests, play music, sing, read scripture, stand beside us, and all of the things it takes to make a wedding happen was so special. It felt like a time to showcase all of the amazing people in our lives who are a big part of who we are as a couple. Overall, our wedding day was a crazy fun and totally relaxed day, which was exactly what we wanted it to be!
I had all my bridesmaids in different dresses, which made our day feel more unique to us. All the girls are so beautiful and have such wonderful personalities and I wanted this to shine through. Plus, the process of finding a dress that suited each of them perfectly was very fun!
We decided to have our head table in the middle of the room. We wanted to be approachable to our guests and be able to chat better with our wedding party. This was the best decision! We got to mix and mingle with so many people who are important to us. We made a playlist of some of our favourite tunes to play throughout the dinner, so it felt like a large but cozy dinner party. We decided to have a dance band instead of a DJ, which was a very good choice for us! We both love to dance and so do our friends and family. The dance floor was packed all night and the band played a mix of classic hits and new pop songs. Having a band play made the dance fun for all ages!
Make sure you know the important pieces of your day when picking a venue. For us, this meant picking a venue with a large dance floor and a lot of mingle space. We also considered the relationships we made with the staff at hotels when checking out venues. Because we wanted a different room setup than most weddings, this took a lot of coordination with the Sheraton staff to make sure tables were in the right place and our decor worked with the space. The staff at the Sheraton were so helpful leading up to and on the wedding day.
If possible, have your wedding rehearsal two days before your wedding. This way you’re not dealing with last minute details the day before your wedding. We enjoyed spending the day before our wedding together with our family and wedding party. This way, the pressure was totally off.
We were given the advice to try to not look at photos for the first month after our wedding. This way your memories solidify and you don’t just remember your day through the lens of the camera but through your own eyes as well. This was really hard to do (and I did end up sneaking a look at a few photos on Instagram) but it helped us remember the moments that were special to us and not just the special moments that were photographed!
