Cypress Hills: Rustic Winter Wedding

From the bride, Kim:

Well, the day was exactly what we had hoped for! December wasn’t originally our first choice when we started planning our wedding; however, for various scheduling reasons, December 3rd was our best option. This compromise turned out to be the best decision in the end! Once we settled on a winter wedding, we envisioned a peaceful winter setting in the Cypress Hills surrounded by family and friends. With a little help from Mother Nature that’s precisely what we had!

We’re both pretty laid back and simplistic, and our wedding day reflected that. Our ceremony was short and sweet! It was important for us to have Kevyn’s 8 year-old son involved in the wedding ceremony. He was the best man and it was very special to have him hand over the rings as we exchanged vows and officially became a family.

Our decorations weren’t over the top – a little tulle, a few lights, and centrepieces made with wood slabs, winter greens, and lanterns. We didn’t participate in some of the classic wedding traditions. Instead of cutting of the cake, we had cupcakes and cake pops. Rather than tossing the bouquet/garter, we had all the married couples gather on the dance floor. As the song they danced to played couples were gradually eliminated based on how long they had been married. The couple married the longest got the bride’s bouquet, and couple married the second longest got the toss bouquet. The live band was awesome and had the dance floor full for the night!

We couldn’t have asked for a better winter day – mild temperatures, fresh snow, and snow-covered trees, with snow falling at times and the sun shining through at times! We were surprised when we got to the resort to even see a speck of snow, because in the days leading up to the wedding, there was no snow anywhere in southern Saskatchewan. So basically we were in the only location in the province with snow for our wedding, and if you’re going to have a winter wedding you might as well have snow! When we were getting pictures taken it started snowing and looked like a white-out, later the sun was shining through the snow covered trees (and our photographer captured these moments perfectly!).

One of the biggest choices we made was deciding on the location of the wedding. Kevyn wanted a hot destination wedding and I wanted a local wedding in order to include more family and friends. The Resort at Cypress Hills was a perfect compromise for us; it was still a destination wedding within Saskatchewan that allowed for more family and friends to attend. An additional benefit was that once guests got to the resort, they were there for the weekend and there was no worries about guests having to travel the night of the wedding. The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting, and perfect for guests to enjoy a weekend away in a snowy paradise. Basically the entire resort was booked for the wedding so we were able to visit with guests freely both before and after the wedding. To be able to share our day (and weekend really) with family and friends in such a private and beautiful setting was amazing!!

Wedding planning advice: I would say that with the right resources you don’t need to hire a professional wedding planner. I found a wedding planning checklist online that I referred to with respect to things to do and the time frame to do them. I also had the benefit of working with Kim Zeman at the Resort at Cypress Hills, who had worked on numerous weddings at their venue, and was super helpful and very attentive to details leading up to and on the day of the wedding. Having a wedding party, friends, and family that are willing to help out is very beneficial. To be able to delegate responsibilities, such as decorating, picking things up, etc. to trusted people eliminates stress and allows you to focus on enjoying the day. My biggest piece of advice is not to stress about the small details because the odds are your guests won’t notice them and down the road you won’t remember either.
