It is really refreshing to find a unique and original bridal show like this in our province. The event was created out of the frustration of a local bride-to-be and now is in its fourth year. It features some amazing talent from our province and boasts an all-inclusive atmosphere for brides and grooms of all ages, cultures and gender orientations. We asked co-creators Melissa Squire and Jennilee Cardinal-Schultz about ‘Not Your Average Bridal Show’.
Sask Ever After: Why did you create a show like this?
Melissa Squire and Jennilee Cardinal-Schultz: Melissa (co-founder and local designer/owner of Alchemy) found herself frustrated when planning her own wedding during the summer of 2014. “Ordering run‐of‐the‐mill, mass‐made, low‐quality wedding items from overseas just didn’t feel like it represented who my husband and I are – not to mention the environmental impact.” So she set out to find vendors who could offer her custom options for her wedding. What she found, in our own beautiful city of Saskatoon, was simply amazing! These findings inspired Jennilee Cardinal-Schultz (makeup artist and owner of Green Tree Beauty) and Melissa Squire to create Not Your Average Bridal Show to help put people face to face with vendors who can help them make their unique event ideas come to life!
SEA: What can brides expect from ‘Not Your Average Bridal Show’?
Melissa and Jennilee: First off, it’s important to know that this show is all-welcoming. All ages, gender orientations, cultures and sizes of brides, grooms, grads and anyone else interested in attending are welcome. Alchemy staff have undergone diversity training and vendors involved are chosen because of their support of our diverse community. Attendees will get to chat with local designers for custom bridal and formal attire, take in the fabulous new event venue at Eclipse, talk to talented makeup artists and hair stylists, meet local jewelry designers, get samples of all-natural skincare and makeup lines, check out tonnes of unique locally made products, eco-friendly choices for event supplies, creative florists, event planners, unique photographers, DJs, caterers and more! There are also chances to win great prizes throughout the day. Many reasons to show up, but the cocktails, pool tables and great music along with the fashion show running all day are all fabulous inventives to stick around and enjoy yourself!
SEA: Will there be a fashion show or anything else taking place during the show?
Melissa and Jennilee: There is a deconstructed fashion show that features hair and makeup from Alchemy staff. All the models are former grad and bridal clients wearing their custom-made garments from local designers. The models will be on platforms and wandering around the show so attendees can chat with them about their experiences throughout the design process and about their special day as well. The fashion show runs for the entire day, so come anytime, you will see it all!
SEA: How is your show different from the other ones in the province?
Melissa and Jennilee: Not Your Average Bridal Show is just that. We cater to those looking for something offbeat and original, not really anything you would find anywhere else – particularly because a lot of it is custom created just for you for your special occasion. We focus on supporting local, unique small businesses and socially and environmentally responsible companies, and building a community of rad supportive and all-welcoming people who will continue to enrich each other’s lives and lift each other up.
SEA: Who are some of the vendors that can be found at the show?
Melissa and Jennilee: New this year, we have Howling Wolf Jewelry, a local metalsmith who makes custom wedding bands but also offers a rad selection of jewelry, great for brides, grooms and wedding parties. Scarlett Dahlia Makeup Artistry has been one of our vendors since the first year. She’s a fab makeup artist but also very professional and organized, which are very important traits for wedding vendors. Click here for the complete list of vendors.
SEA: Let us know anything else that you think brides should know about attending!
Melissa and Jennilee: Humans attending the show should buy tickets in advance to ensure they get one of the awesome 150 Wedding Day Emergency Kit SWAG Bags and also to save $5 on admittance. Come with ideas of the theme of your event, be prepared for booking incentives and the many fabulous items available for purchase at the show also. There are 2 ATM’s on-site, the bar is cash only.
